We're regularly asked for our advice on what aspiring young web developers and programmers should be doing to get their skills up-to-scratch and prepare themselves for the working world. So, we thought we'd write a blog with some of our top tips based on the experiences of our fantastic After Digital web development team.
Whether you're just starting out and dipping your toes into the web development water, have been coding for years, or recently graduated with a top-notch degree, the transition into the workplace can be daunting. But there are plenty things you can be doing to make sure you stay on top of all the latest coding languages, trends and best practice procedures, which will help you stand out from the crowd when applying for a job.
Our top tips for the aspiring web developer:
- Keep up with current technologies,
- Experiment constantly,
- Use github,
- Make the most of social media such as Twitter - follow real industry leaders - normally not the ones that shout the loudest,
- Build inspiration from external sources,
- Experiment some more,
- Learn how to best translate complex problems into practical terms,
- And fundamentally, do stuff that excites you and that you're passionate about.
If you're doing something that doesn't tick the above boxes, do something else!
Web development is constantly evolving and changing in line with technological advances, and so it requires constant enthusiasm, awareness and dedication. If you're not committed to keeping up with all the latest in the digital landscape then it is not for you.
The best web developers I've met are those that don't just see it as work but live and breathe it as part of their daily lives and are passionate. They like to 'play' and see what new things they can come up with. They take on challenges and love the opportunity and freedom to problem solve and present potential solutions.
