Bringing new talent into the industry is important to us. Helping people to uncover their love for digital and grow their skills is something we're committed to developing. As such, we regularly welcome in students and graduates with work experience placements and internship schemes. We recently had an aspiring young developer Jen spend a week with the creative team and last week we were thrilled to welcome Amir Shafiq to the marketing team for a fortnight of work experience. A current university student at Glasgow Caledonian University and ambitious marketer, Amir joined us to experience 'agency life', enhance his digital marketing skills before returning to university and ultimately identify what areas of digital marketing he wished to pursue a career in after graduating.
I sat down with Amir to find out a little more about him and what he has learned during his time with us so far.
Tell us more about what you are doing at the moment.
Currently, I am nearing the end of my summer break. I am studying for a degree in International Marketing at Glasgow Caledonian University and I will be commencing my third year later this month.
What made you choose us for your work experience?
I was on the hunt for some digital marketing work experience with an exciting agency. I had a long summer break from May until September and I wanted to apply my thirst for learning to a relevant placement. I was lucky enough to have a family friend who had a contact working at AD and she introduced to the team there. I contacted them and asked to come in to gain some experience and was absolutely delighted to secure a work placement. I was really happy to begin working with AD for a week of work experience to enhance my digital marketing skills before returning to university and even more so when they agreed to extend this experience for a second week!
What have you learned about us so far?
From my time here so far, I can see that AD aims to satisfy their clients. Having read through all the client case studies, seeing the team working first-hand and seeing the results AD have achieved for their clients - it truly is amazing. AD have a great reputation when it comes to solving problems and satisfying the needs of their clients. The team are always helpful and super friendly.
What do you get up to in your spare time?
I am a big gamer, so I like to play video games. I also go to the gym a few times a week, spend time with family and friends and I enjoy studying, both for my university course and for my own development.
Do you have a party piece or any hidden talents?
Hmmm, I honestly don’t know. I’m learning more and more about myself as I go on (particularly with things like this experience) but my mum always tells me that I’m great at studying. I'm not sure that qualifies as a hidden talent though.
What is your biggest achievement so far?
After years of working hard at business in school and college, I was excited to be accepted into my degree at university. I have to say this is my biggest achievement so far.
Stranded on a desert island, which three items would you take with you?
My smartphone (hopefully i can get 4G on it haha), a flare (to alert people to my location) and my portable phone charger (ideally an infinitely charged one), so that I can extend the batter life of my smartphone.
Which celebrity would play you and why?
I asked my sister this and she said either Ben Affleck or Christian Bale, whilst my mum said Johnny Depp. Personally, I think it would have to be the Indian actor Akshay Kumar, because I’ve been told that I look like him.
What quote/motto do you live by?
I live by many things but one which comes to mind is “a problem is not a problem without a solution.”
Has your time with us made you think you might like to work in an agency in the future?
Absolutely, I have really enjoyed my time here so far. The atmosphere is great! The whole team have been very welcoming, the environment is very vibrant and it is a great place to work. This is the first time I have had any experience working within an agency and I’ll definitely be leaving with great impressions.
I have two more years at university and I hope to gain more digital marketing experience - I would love to spend more time working in an agency (maybe AD). Hopefully, by the time I graduate I'll be well positioned to break into the industry.
Over the week it’s been fantastic to see Amir taking on new challenges and learning new skills. From keyword research to analysing data, he's gained exposure to new tools and knowledge, which will hopefully set him up with a solid understanding of the basics of digital marketing. We're delighted that he's enjoyed his time here with us, so much so that he requested to stay on with us for a further week. Watch this space for a blog coming from Amir soon!
