Coder Dojo Glasgow kicked off this week with an introductory session to programming at the beautiful Glasgow Science Centre on Saturday.

Coder Dojo is a global movement initiated by Bill Liao & James Whelton, which aims to educate and inspire by providing free, regular computer coding clubs for young people.  The first session of its type was launched in the National Software Centre in Cork, followed closely by the Dublin Dojo and then more sessions worldwide. Young people with all levels of experience are welcome, with some coming with little to no coding knowledge and others having a good grasp of programming basics.

With the success of this movement Stephen Breslin, CEO at the Glasgow Science Centre, wished to introduce this initiative to Glasgow, making it the first Coder Dojo to be held in Scotland thus far.  Stephen then contacted the University of Glasgow and STEM Education Specialist Craig Steele to help set up the Glasgow Coder Dojos.

After Digital’s team were invited along as mentors and guest speakers to discuss web development in a professional context and how to best progress into a career in programming and digital. After a brief presentation the floor was opened up and those attending were able to ask After Digital’s experienced developers any questions they had.

Championed by Craig, the session introduced the young coders to basic html and the foundations of computer science, and was supported by a mix of mentors from a variety of different backgrounds. After Digital was impressed by how much those who attended already knew and how quickly they picked up new skills.

Top tips from the day:

  • Don’t be afraid to play around with code. The best way to learn is by doing and learning from any mistakes you make along the way.
  • Contribute and collaborate. The best developers believe in an open community, one where information is freely shared so that everyone gains the benefits of each other’s expertise and knowledge.

The next Coder Dojo will be held on Saturday 11th August again at the Glasgow Science Centre and After Digital looks forward to going along, helping out and seeing what the young coders will learn next!
