The last few months have welcomed some very exciting new clients both here in the UK and overseas. These successes have meant we’ve been looking at growing our team and bringing in new talent that matches our aspirations. So, we’re delighted to welcome Rachel Ward, our new Senior Designer, to the team - a design aficionado with an impressive portfolio spanning some of our favourite movies (hello Guardians of the Galaxy and The Jungle Book). She’ll be working across the design team in Glasgow and Manchester, so we caught up with her to hear what makes her tick.
Why were you drawn to After Digital?
The focus on great UX design and the big involvement with the arts caught my interest when I was applying to AD. I love a good museum and gallery (and zoo!!) and the idea of working within sectors like these was super appealing to me. Being an advocate for the user is really important to me in my design process, so working in a place that focuses on that from the get-go is fantastic.
Tell us a bit about what you did before joining us?
I’ve been working within the advertising sector as a digital designer for the past 4+ years, within digital music advertising (Spotify, Deezer) predominantly. Connecting brands and music was at the core of the work I did, from creating content hubs and interactive interfaces to rich-media ads for amazing clients like Disney, Marvel, Nike and Bose.
What do you bring to the team?
Mad pixel-perfect skills! My design superhero skills include sayings such as “that looks like it’s two pixels off”, as well as being able to identify a font from 200 yards… that’s an exaggeration, but I really am good at identifying fonts (largely from spending far too much time ogling pretty typefaces over the years). I’ve got some front-end skills and I love experimenting with layout, grids and typography in the digital space to push the boundaries of design while delivering great, usable experiences.
My experience working with a lot of global clients should be really useful also. The bulk of my clients have been in the USA, so I hope that my insight into this market, as well as many other territories (from Singapore to Germany to Hong Kong), is practical and useful to the team as we do more and more international work.
What do you do in your spare time?
I like seeing movies on the big screen so you’ll often find me at the cinema. Or eating, I love a good dinner…. or lunch... or breakfast. Checking out a good exhibition or concert is also my idea of a good time - I often plan my holidays to involve them specifically! I’m also nearly finished making a big patchwork quilt that I’ve been crocheting for the past year.
Do you have a party piece or any hidden talents?
I’ve watched every episode of Frasier and have a bit too much knowledge of that for an average person… not sure if that’s a talent though! I’m also an unexpected weightlifter, I can squat 100kg (which is apparently the weight of a baby elephant).
Stranded on a desert island, which three items would you take and why?
SPF – I’m always the palest person in the room, so that one is a no brainer. A phone, so I could ring somebody that knew what they were doing to get me off the island! And then loads of snacks, so I wouldn’t go hungry.
Which celeb would play you in a movie?
Let’s go for Amy Adams as she’s a fellow redhead!

In terms of my design life, you can’t go wrong with quoting Don Norman...
