Founded in 1989, TKC came from humble origins; Tom Kelly began selling kitchen components from his garage and within a year had achieved a £100,000 turnover, which subsequently grew into the company you see today; a £19m business, employing 128 staff. TKC are a leading trade supplier in the UK and Ireland for the kitchen and bedroom industry, offering over 50 ranges of doors, accessories and components to trade customers. TKC initially approached us based on our experience with managing large scale ecommerce sites, with detailed and complex API integrations.

With our partnership starting in 2009, we originally began by simply maintaining and improving TKC’s existing website, which was largely unresponsive and tired. So, when budget allowed TKC contracted us to develop their new brochure site in 2014, this site was built to showcase their range of kitchen and bedroom doors through the use of full-screen kitchen images, specifically aimed at homeowners who needed a clean and easy site to view potential kitchen ranges.
Driving increased returns
With the previous website lacking thought-out design and essential viewing options for customers, it was imperative that this site had as much information as possible, on top of this, we installed smart features like ‘Choose your range’ filters, to help visitors narrow down their options and self-serve, thus creating a more intuitive and enjoyable user experience. The updated site has driven significant business returns, resulting in a 19% increase in sessions, 21% increase in users, as well as a 99% increase in customer account registrations in the last year alone.
A long-term partnership
Following on from the success of their brochure site, TKC required an ecommerce store to facilitate business to business sales for their extensive range of kitchen components. Their key requirement was to integrate their online presence with the existing ERP system "Access Supply Chain" to allow online orders to be entered directly into their existing order delivery process and to keep the website up to date with the latest product and inventory data.
Kitchen components can be ordered with a variety of configurations and a complex matrix of order codes. So, we invested heavily in the discovery phase of the project to transfer knowledge for TKC’s team of experts to our delivery team, thus enabling us to design and build intricate user interfaces that allow the user to quickly and easily formulate an accurate list of components, with all of the detail that TKC’s warehouse team require in order to prepare an order for delivery.
Working closely with their team, we built a custom REST API to allow their internal systems to be accessible from authorised external systems. We then proceeded to integrate the Magento store with the API to provide TKC with advanced functionality including:
- Product and stock updates
- Order synchronisation
- Customer synchronisation
Bespoke functionality was crafted to provide the user with a suite of tools to make their purchase path as smooth as possible and allow the user to hot-swap products within their preconfigured kitchen layouts, which would include custom drilling patterns, finishes, and accessories.
With each site being built to give TKC full flexibility to update and maintain themselves, their in-house team is able to respond and scale to their evolving business needs.
The result, two websites which have delivered quantifiable business results and increased revenues, including doubling their customer account registrations and driving a 21% growth in traffic to the website.
